On the trail
Mr. and Mrs. Fritz Schlegel of Cherry Valley are ardent exponents of
the thrills and beauties of riding the trail. The Schegels spent 10
months conditioning their horses (he is riding a half Arab, Khala Mio,
and her steed is Kanana, a pureblood Arab) before entering them in the
Grand National Livestock Exposition, Horse Show and Rodeo at the Cow
Palace in San Francisco last weekend. Kanana is the champion of
the two.

If you're looking for a new hobby, Mr. and Mrs. Fritz Schlegel, 38718
Brookside, Cherry Valley, suggest trail riding. Last weekend they attended
the Grand National Livestock Exposition, Horse Show and Rodeo at the Cow
Palace in San Francisco. On Sunday they presented their champion and reserve
champion trail horses for the 1965 North American Trail Rides Conference, an
organization endeavoring to make competitive trail riding a popular sport
for those who love to ride horseback.
Mrs. Schlegel told me it really is the horse that wins the award. They are
checked by a veterinarian before and after the ride on manners and trail
ability.
The rides ore usually two days, covering 30 to 35 miles each day in a six
and a half to seven hour day riding time. The Schlegels estimate that in
the 10 months that they were conditioning their horses and including the
rides, they have traveled at least 2,000 miles on horseback and 6,000
miles trailering the horses. The rides, she said, are a wonderful way to
see a lot of this beautiful country of ours.
If you’d like to know more about this hobby, contact them and they’ll fill
in the details. Oh yes, she has the champion horse!
