Roswell E. Bolen Dies; Former Boro Concilman

Roswell E. Bolen of 508 Green Brook Road, a former North Plainfield councilman, died Saturday (September 7, 1957) at Muhlenberg Hospital. He was founder and president of the Approved Fire Protection Company of North Plainfield.

Mr. Bolen was born in Hoboken, but moved to North Plainfield 54 years ago. He attended borough schools. After business college, he started his career as a production manager for a Roselle manufacturer of hydraulic machinery, the Watson Stillman Company.

Worked for Mack

He was employed by this firm for 19 years until 1939. He then went to work for Mack Trucks, Inc., where he was an assistant general foreman for four years.

Since his youth, Mr. Bolen was interested in fire prevention. About 30 years ago he began his company more or less as a avocation. In the 1940s he turned it into a full-time business.

Mr. Bolen was elected a member of the North Plainfield Council in 1947 and served on the governing body through 1953. He was president of the Council in 1952. He did not seek reelection in 1953.

He as a former call man for the borough fire department. A 32nd degree Mason, he was a member of Anchor Lodge, F and AM, of Plainfield, the Plainfield Forest of Tall Cedars of Lebanon and the New Jersey Conciatory, Valley of Jersey City. He was on the advisory committee of the First National Bank of Somerset County's North Plainfield Branch.

Other Interests

He was a member of the American Society of Safety Engineers, an associate member of National Fire Protection Association, and a member of the Plainfield Rotary Club.

Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Evelyn G. Clause Bolen; three daughters, Mrs. Dorothy B. Niper of 1500 Maple Avenue, South Plainfield, Mrs. Donald D Mundwiler of 1223 Cherry Street, South Plainfield and Mrs. Leo Cetuk of 58 Sycamore Avenue; a brother, Wilbur F. Bolen of 402 Second Street, Dunellen, and two  sisters, Mrs. Lester Gingerich of Wynnewood, Pennsylvania, and Mrs. Franklin Wicks of 130 Westervelt Avenue; and seven grandchildren.

The funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Memorial Funeral Home by the Reverend Earl E. Hair of the Watchung Avenue Presbyterian Church.

Interment will be in Hillside Cemetery.

Anchor Lodge will hold services at 7:30 p.m. tomorrow and the Plainfield Rotary Club at 8:30 p.m., both at the funeral home.
