Harry Edward Mundwiler was born in Elkhart, Illinois on September 19, 1870 to Civil War veteran Jacob Christopher and Alice Virginia Nead.
Harry made his way to western Minnesota where he married Mary Sophie Olsen at the age of 21. Sophie was born in Lincoln, South Dakota on October 20, 1872. Her mother, Ellen Svendatter, was born in Norway. Multiple sources state that Sophie's father was killed in an Indian raid on their western bound wagon train. Ellen later married Thoston Olsen, who adopted Sophie.
Soon after the birth of their first child, Ralph, Harry and Sophie moved to Ortonville in Big Stone County and built a family homestead.

Son Orrie founded the Mundwiler-Larson Funeral Home in Milbank, South Dakota.
